The world of the fullo

It took some time to decide which image would be on the cover of the thesis, but this is perhaps the most logical choice. It shows a view from one of the fulling stalls in the fullonica of Stephanus at Pompeii. This pretty much was what a worker in here was seeing during his work day - with two colleagues next to him, and two others on the opposite side of the basin, in which there was place for another worker as well. It shows how close these people were working together, and how their arrangement invites them to see each other and to communicate whilst doing the hard work.
